Tribute to a worthy Comrade, Chief Geoffrey Obiaigwe -The Ezenweali of Owa Kingdom WHAT A PAIN ON THE LONG NIGHT Where are you, Comrade Geoffrey Obiaigwe? I hear your voice but I cannot find you. Chief, do you see me? Yes, was the answer. Please, come and see me for the public needs our attention. “I will try but not immediately. I am at the gate but the slope is steeping and the people across there asked for my prompt attention. I am overseeing a crowd but do not know why they are exercising joy”. Chief Obiaigwe, why do you delay in answer to my invitation? It is most unlike you. “Sir, let me obtain permission”. Obiaigwe, permission from whom – the voice dropped and disappeared. You retired from the Delta State Civil Service with unblemished records. You humbly accepted to serve as Owa Palace Secretary – cost free. You became a titled Chief of Owa with the appellation – “Ezenweali”. You became an adviser and grew tall in the Palace activities with respect and positive action. You fell sick and hospitalized. This journey took you to the UBTH – Benin city. Chief Geoffrey Obiaigwe, when I last saw you at the hospital bed at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital and your voice began to drop, I was still hopeful that my Lord-God would accept my supplications for you to be rescued from the dangers of death. I tried to convince myself that you will recover from this illness as you did many times before now. My dear Chief I am still in great doubt as to what has happened to you. You know that I love and respected you. I treasured your intellect, your skill, your trust, your simplicity, your open-heartedness, your prompt to duty attitude, your initiative, your industry, your foresightedness, your conviviality, your magic pen, your artistic writing, your ingenuity of thought, your franktitude and your speed, including constructive engagement at all levels. Comrade Obiaigwe, why did you withdraw your romantic administrative correspondent services from Owa at a time your services are most needed. You suspended my fighting spirit at a time that the war of self defence has risen to its crucial level. Now I know what death can do. It hits hard and comes at times when most unexpected. It is the greatest conqueror of all times. Your services were the most humanistic of our time. I weep and weep and the ancestors are in pains. Your death is a major damage to our administrative structure. “When comes this next”? Chief Geoffrey Obiaigwe. If my heart was large enough, I would have offered it for your burial spot. “This is the unkindest cut of all”. The palace and the good people of Owa will bear this sear for too long unless God, Almighty comes to our rescue. My brother, you will surely see Chief Onyela, the man who offered all he had for the service of Owa for my sake. Greet him. You will give him the good account of our efforts. I have no means to hold you back because God wants you in his bosom. I thank you most sincerely for your selfless services. Yours was the best. Chief Geoffrey Obiaigwe, let me reassure that wherever and whenever we shall meet; we shall say – Bros – all well that ends well. Thank you, God bless, rest well and good night in Jesus name – Amen. Signed: HRM, Dr. Efeizomor II (JP) OON The Obi of Owa Kingdom 21st June, 2013 ==============
