Trigger warning: A woman was telling us that she just returned from a vacation to South Africa. When we asked how it was, she hesitated, and said that she was disappointed because she expected it to be more AFRICAN. And she said her safari was on PAVED ROADS. Finally, she expressed her frustration that it was just SO DEVELOPED. I cant even begin to explain how many things are wrong with this whole thing. First, African countries (and other developing continents/countries do not exist solely for your poverty tourism and to perpetuate your ethnocentric fantasies of static, tribal societies. Also, why would anyone celebrate a lack of development? Why wouldnt we marvel at development? Finally, what about the South African culture; was anything learnt about anything other than animals on safari? I know my former professors and intl studies/anthro people will appreciate this... End rant for now.
