True Wealth The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life...John 10:10 Somewhere in the recesses of our being is a desire to have a full and rewarding life. That doesnt mean the same thing for everybody. Full and rewarding to one may be empty and less than desirable to another, but we all think we know what it means to us. Living in a culture that idolizes stuff means that, more often than not, we believe that the more stuff we can collect the richer we are and the more satisfied our lives will be. Just look at the storage units that are full and overflowing, take a look at the attic or the garage and see if its not true. Television programs are committing a stack of money that would block out the sun if it was stacked up just to show the dysfunctional aspects of our belief that stuff satisfies. The problem is that many things that are built, manufactured, or put together with human hands have a shelf life that is less than our attention span. How many times have we gotten the thing that was going to gives us a piece to the puzzle of contentment only to have it make its way to the mountain of other things that didnt deliver on the commercials promise? Bank accounts, stocks, vehicles and houses make up just a small part of our list of our pursuits thinking if we could just get our grubby little fingers on them what a new day would dawn. The future would be lined with gold trimming and the emptiness of yesterday would soon be forgotten. So we plan and scheme, we hunt and study, we become obsessed with the hope that something will break our way and we will be able to lay our head on the pillow of security and satisfaction because the stuff is now ours. The misconception of our world view is that being rich has to do with things we can touch, feel, see, taste, and hear. If our five senses approve then there cant be an argument, there is no reason to look any farther. So we spend ourselves into the poor house trying to find the ever allusive ingredient that makes a full and rewarding life possible. You want to be rich? You want to be able to take in a big gulp of fresh crisp satisfaction? Then do not look in the home listings, auto dealerships, or do not stash cash with the expectation that it will be there when you need it. If you want to be incredibly wealthy, completely satisfied or deliriously happy begin to look for things that will never lose its value. Begin to live with no excuses. If we did it, own it. If we havent, own it. Putting a muzzle on excuses gets us on our way to a satisfying life. Begin to love with no regrets. Not every one is worthy of our love but if we love like we want to be loved, our feet will walk on the path that leads to incomprehensible wealth. Begin to laugh with frequent regularity. If we find the humor in life and learn to giggle at ourselves, our ulcers wont flare up as much and our demeanor will take on the hues of happiness and peace. When its finally time to look back through the pages of our story and weigh the good and the bad on the scale of life, if we have valued true wealth that leaves a legacy, we will be able to say goodnight with nothing to prove, nothing to hide and nothing to lose.
