Trust the masters of spin to come up with bullshit like this. Vote share calculations in a Parliamentary democracy are meaningless. Even if a candidate gets *one* vote more than his closest opponent, he is the winner. Are you going to say his win is any less significant because of the margin? This is like bashing a team that wins a cricket match for doing so with 1 wicket in hand instead of 10; or by 1 run instead of a huge margin. So what if the match was closely fought- it does not take away from the victory. Previous elections have seen such lopsided results because of several factors: Congress being the default party for a very long time with no feasible alternatives, fragmented opposition, mass-scale rigging, voter ignorance and most of all voter apathy by the great urban middle classes. This is the closest we have come to a 2-party Presidential-style election. Instead of celebrating the verdict as a triumph of democracy, media houses that have consistently been pro-Congress are trying to discount the BJP triumph by massaging the numbers. If anything, the smaller vote share should only sensitize us more to the fact that EVERY VOTE COUNTS! I am so glad now that I travelled 150 km home to vote with my parents in tow.
