Truth about separation of church and state. The separation of church and state was about the concept of a state (or the Federal Government) having an official denomination (as the English had the Church of England.) It doesnt appear in any of the founding documents, but rather in a letter of Thomas Jeffersons assuring the Danbury Baptists that they would be protected from the actions of the state. (Not that the state would be protected from the baptists, note.) It had nothing whatever to do with keeping God or even Religion from having a place in public discourse. In fact, if you read the founders writings, including their speeches in Congress, you will find them to be intensely and overtly religious. Quoted by James The statement is correct that notion of separation of church and state was to protect religions from having to contend with an official state church. It was never intended to keep religion out of govt.
