Tuesday - August 5th - Thin By Carol Buzalsky — 17 minutes ago when I stopped in to see mom after work tonight and she was laying reclined in bed instead of more upright, it hit me how thin she really is. There really isnt much to my mom. She looked so tiny laying in the hospital bed. Its when she woke up from dozing and gave me her big smile that I sighed with relief and thought, yep thats my mom. I had a great lunch with my aunt Marlene, Great Aunt Linda and cousin Nancy today. During lunch I found out the doctors were starting to discuss where mom would go for the next phase of recovery. She is too weak to go directly to inpatient rehabilitation. She also needs to have some time to be weaned off of the ventilator due to the weakened condition of her lungs and she is having dialysis a few times a week until her kidneys kick back in. This means she needs to go to a place that can handle her vent, wound vac, dialysis and fragile condition. So after lunch I went back to the hospital to check in with the social worker who is looking for a placement for mom. At this time we dont know what all of our options will be. Ideally we would prefer to keep her in Fargo so she is near to family and friends. Unfortunately there are very limited places in MN, ND or SD so we dont know if mom will end up in the Minneapolis area at a place like Bethesda or if she will end up back at Vibra. The infectious disease doctors is hoping that sometime in a month or so mom will be stable enough to be able to have the surgery to replace her heart valves. Its overwhelming when think about the journey mom still has ahead of her. She is currently stable and smiling, but she has a very unbelievable journey ahead of her in future surgeries and rebuilding her strength and getting her systems (ex - lung, stomach, kidney) working on their own again. Thanks to everyone who has continued to send cards and messages to mom. They sure do brighten her day. Mom had a few visitors today. Her sister Marlene was with her all day, her aunt Linda was there most of the day also. Char Rudolph stopped in to see mom for a short visit. A friend of my sisters, Jeni Beck, who was patiently waiting for news of being a grandmother stopped in to see mom. She left quickly though to go back to the OB floor at Sanford when she got the call that the baby had arrived! Megan Weiland was also planning on stopping by tonight to see mom for a short visit. Mom was awake for most of the morning. The afternoon brought a trip to Radiology for a CT of her abdomen due to stomach pain she was having. No results from the CT yet. She also was getting a dialysis treatment which lasts about 3 hours. That was started about 6 so will go until at least 9 tonight. Mom was struggling with pain and the stress on her body from dialysis so she was sleepy tonight. Praying for mom to continue her stable direction, for me to finish researching and get mom signed up for a Medicare supplement and for the doctors to help guide us in the process of determining where mom should go for the next phase of her recovery.
