Tuesday 15 July 2014 Saint Bonaventure, Bishop, Doctor (Tuesday of week 15 in Ordinary Time) Morning Prayer Lord, open our lips. And we shall praise your name. Invitatory Psalm:Psalm 95 (NIV) – The Lord is the source of all wisdom: come, let us adore him. 1 Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. 3 For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. 5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. 6 Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; 7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if only you would hear his voice, 8 “Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah[b] in the wilderness, 9 where your ancestors tested me; they tried me, though they had seen what I did. 10 For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways.’ 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’” Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. – The Lord is the source of all wisdom: come, let us adore him -------------------------------------- Hymn: O Christ, the Light of heaven And of the world true Light, You come in all your radiance To cleave the web of night. May what is false within us Before your truth give way, That we may live untroubled, With quiet hearts this day. May steadfast faith sustain us, And hope made firm in you; The love that we have wasted, O God of love, renew. Blest Trinity we praise you In whom our quest will cease; Keep us with you for ever In happiness and peace. ----------------------------------- Psalm 85 (NIV) Lord, you blessed your land; you forgave the guilt of your people. 1 You, Lord, showed favour to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob. 2 You forgave the iniquity of your people and covered all their sins. 3 You set aside all your wrath and turned from your fierce anger. 4 Restore us again, God our Saviour, and put away your displeasure toward us. 5 Will you be angry with us forever? Will you prolong your anger through all generations? 6 Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? 7 Show us your unfailing love, Lord, and grant us your salvation. 8 I will listen to what God the Lord says; he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants— but let them not turn to folly. 9 Surely his salvation is near those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. 10 Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other. 11 Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven. 12 The Lord will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest. 13 Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Lord, you blessed your land; you forgave the guilt of your people. ------------------------------------- Canticle:Isaiah 26 A strong city have we; he sets up walls and ramparts to protect us. Open up the gates to let in a nation that is just, one that keeps faith. A nation of firm purpose you keep in peace; in peace, for its trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever! For the Lord is an eternal Rock. The way of the just is smooth; the path of the just you make level. Yes, for your way and your judgements, O Lord, we look to you; Your name and your title are the desire of our souls. My soul yearns for you in the night, yes, my spirit within me keeps vigil for you; When your judgment dawns upon the earth, the worlds inhabitants learn justice. O Lord, you mete out peace to us, for it is you who have accomplished all we have done. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. ------------------------------------------- Psalm 67 (NIV) 1 May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us— 2 so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations. 3 May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. 4 May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth. 5 May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. 6 The land yields its harvest; God, our God, blesses us. 7 May God bless us still, so that all the ends of the earth will fear him. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. ------------------------------------ Short Reading:1 John 4:14-15 (NIV) 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. ------------------------------------ Short Responsory: My helper is my God; I will place my trust in him. – My helper is my God; I will place my trust in him. He is my refuge; he sets me free. – My helper is my God; I will place my trust in him. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. – My helper is my God; I will place my trust in him. -------------------------------------- Canticle:Benedictus Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; he has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty saviour, born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. --------------------------------------------- Prayers and intercessions: By shedding his blood for us, Christ gathered together a new people from every corner of the earth. Let us pray to him: – Christ, be mindful of your people. Christ, our king and redeemer: help us to know your power and your love. – Christ, be mindful of your people. Christ, our hope and courage: sustain us throughout the day. – Christ, be mindful of your people. Christ, our refuge and strength: fight with us against our weakness. – Christ, be mindful of your people. Christ, our joy and solace: stay with the poor and lonely. – Christ, be mindful of your people. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Almighty God and Father, on this feast of Saint Bonaventure, enlighten our minds with the splendour of his teaching, and help us to imitate his ardent love of you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
