Tuesday 28th October Emu Room Update: Reflection by Jenna This morning Ace excitedly explained that he had been spotting bees in the fairy garden and he was very eager to show them to me. We discussed how to stay safe around bees and Ryder explained to Ace, Grace and Millie that if a bees stings you it dies. Why? Well because it only has one bullet to shoot! Upon returning inside I asked the children to paint a picture of a bee and while doing so tell me what they knew about bees. Here are the responses I received: Riley: They sting. While he was painting his picture he explained that he was painting his bee collecting pollen Olivia M: They steal flowers. Olivia went on to explain that she had made honey for the bees to eat with her friend Myah Hudson: They collect pollen because it’s their food Cody: They like honey Ace: They sting, eat flowers and get honey for people (they make it). Daisy: They sting you and get honey for us to eat Rebecca: They are yellow and black with wings at the top Ryder: They are yellow and black and they sting and then they die because they’ve only got one shot Tilly: They might actually sting you Eva: They make honey by using nectar from flowers Guy: Black and yellow and they fly Connor: They collect honey Lucas: They sting you Tyson: They make honey Lucia: Collect nectar Millie: Take pollen to their hive, they get it from the flowers. Daisy, Olivia, Danika, Cody and Grace helped to paint a flower on the glass door that we then stuck our bees too. Daisy said she wished she could just pick the flower straight off the door. Before lunch we explored several short videos about bees. We learnt about key words associated with bees such as the queen, nectar, wax, pollen, larvae, honey pot, protective clothing. As a transition to lunch the children role played being bees. One child was the bee, the other was a mischievous child poking the bee. The bee stung the child and then died because it had shot its one bullet.
