Tuesday 9th July, 2013 Issued at 6:00 am Advisory #7 for St. Vincent and the Grenadines, on Tropical Storm CHANTAL A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for St. Vincent and the Grenadines TROPICAL STORM CHANTAL IS RACING TOWARDS THE LESSER ANTILLES…. At 5:00 am the center of “Chantal” was located near 13.3°N 58.4°W or about 189 miles…305 km to the east of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Chantal is moving West- North West towards the Island Chain/Lesser Antilles at 26 mph…43 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are 50mph…85km/h with higher gusts near showers. The estimated minimum central pressure was 1010mbs (29.82 inches). Tropical Storm- force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 KM) mainly to the north of the center…. The center of Chantal is forecasted to pass about 80 miles to the north of St. Vincent and the Grenadines later this morning. Further deterioration in conditions is expected as the morning progresses. St. Vincent and the Grenadines can expect pockets of moderate to heavy showers, scattered thunderstorms and winds gusting to storm-force throughout the morning into this afternoon as Tropical Storm Chantal moves over the island chain. Rainfall accumulations of 50 to 100millimeters (2 to 4inches) are anticipated with higher amounts in mountainous areas. Sea conditions will deteriorate and storm surge will raise water levels as high as 4 meters (13ft). Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by dangerous waves… Small craft operators should secure craft. Residents should take all necessary precautions and monitor the development of Tropical Storm Chantal. The St Vincent and the Grenadines Meteorological Office continues to monitor the movement of Tropical Storm Chantal and will issue the next advisory at 8:30 am on Tuesday 9th July, 2013.
