Tuesday, July 9: 1 Kings 17:1-6 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) Elijah Predicts a Drought 17 Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.” 2 The word of the Lord came to him, saying, 3 “Go from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Wadi Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. 4 You shall drink from the wadi, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” 5 So he went and did according to the word of the Lord; he went and lived by the Wadi Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the wadi. Reflection: Jehovah-rohi is always beside you, leading you in the way of truth and according to his will. In today’s reading, God tells the prophet Elijah to speak to King Ahab. Elijah had been very concerned for Israel because the nation had turned its back on the Lord and had begun to worship idols. Ahab’s wife, Jezebel, had led the entire nation into worshiping Baal. At God’s command, Elijah took the word of the Lord to Ahab, telling this Baal-worshiping king that there would be no rain in the land for several years because of his apostasy. Then, Elijah followed God’s instruction to go to the little brook of Cherith where God fed him morning and evening. When have you felt an urging from God? Did you follow his leading? How has God sustained you in times of trouble?
