Tuesday evening. Ibis Hotel, Birmingham Airport. I’m back on the seventh floor, but no Mumbai views here. No Mani’s rice plate, either, or the dulcet tones of cow and cab. How sad. I’ve an early morning flight to Tegel on the morrow. After downtown Matunga, Lincoln looked and felt decidedly drab. Hopefully Berlin will save the day. A week ago I sat down with the coaches, assistants, and Peter, at an end of session meeting. Top of the agenda: Player of the Month Awards. I let the others pick the U14 player, but pleaded executive privilege on the choice of U18 award. I picked Hiren for a variety of reasons. First up, he’s a very good cricketer: neat, tidy, compact. A fast bowler of some pace, he’s also a wristy middle order batsman. In the field he has a strong arm along with an uncanny knack, as with all the others, of fielding cleanly on the most uneven of outfields. Theres a joy about his approach to the game and the sessions. You can just tell he’s pleased to be out there. Not only that, but happy to do all and more that’s asked of him. Further, he plays the game with a smile. And that, is quite rare these days.
