Tukar nama jalan . . . But sometimes the complaints are justified. Changing the name of roads not only entails public funds – the change entails many other unseen costs. For example, businesses will have to change their stationery, letterheads, envelope, signages, publications and inform their customers of change in address. For some roads, this could affect hundreds of businesses. People who lose their direction or are unable to find certain places because the road names have been changed suffer loss of productivity cost. Changing road names is not simply a matter of switching road signs – there are many cost implications and burden is borne by many people. Remember that many people have emotional attachment to the streets where they live in. . But, I also agree that we can and should recognise people who have made contributions to the nation by naming roads after them. . I have a suggestion. We, in Malaysia, build many new roads every year. Why don’t we reserve these new roads to be named after the monarchs or prominent persons or national heroes? Instead of changing names of existing roads, why don’t we name newly built roads after the people whom we wish to recognise and pay tribute to? Pretty straightforward and hassle free, isn’t it? .
