Tumour out, Iraqi toddler gets a new lease of life By Express News Service - CHENNAI , INDIAN EXPRESS 11th December 2012 10:48 AM • In safe hands: Umniyah with her mother at a press meet in the city on Monday | S S Sudharshan Two-year-old Umniyah Bilal Ghanim sat snugly on her mother’s lap, looking curiously at the myriad faces speaking a strange language and cameras focused on her. Three weeks ago, she was a fretful girl with a swollen stomach caused by a 2-kg tumour, which was successfully removed by doctors at the Kauvery Hospital here two weeks ago. When Umniyah was around a year old, her parents detected a swelling in her abdomen. Scans revealed a mass that was growing in the stomach region, pushing her kidneys and liver back. Doctors in an Iraqi hospital attempted to remove the mass but decided against proceeding as they were unable to locate its origin. Dr P Bala Mourougane of Kauvery Hospital said that his team, nevertheless, took the surgery as a challenge. “The results showed fibromatosis — a type of benign tumour that occurs aggressively and locally. When her parents brought her here three weeks ago, we decided to do a complete review of her files and after multiple sessions with the parents, we decided to go ahead,” he said. The surgery was done on November 25. When surgeons began the operation, it was still unclear as to where the tumour had started from. In spite of this, Dr Bala and his team continued the surgery. During the procedure, the doctors found its origin — the point where the small intestine starts. Over two feet of the gut had to be sacrificed, but the tumour was completely removed. The surgery cost Rs 1.5 lakh. After the nearly nine-hour-long surgery, Umniyah made a remarkably fast recovery. Three days in the ICU and on the ventilator did not diminish her vivacity, said Dr Aravindan Selvaraj of Kauvery Hospital.
