Tumour removed from 2-yr-old with laparoscopic operation A two-year-old boy was brought to the Department of Paediatric Surgery of Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, from the border area of Kashmir with a complaint of swelling over right side of abdomen and inability to pass urine. Clinical examination revealed that the child did not have testis in the right scrotum since birth. Further blood tests and CT scan investigations revealed that right testis was present in the abdomen, but it had become a big tumour. Dr William Bhatti, professor and head of Department of Paediatric Surgery, with his team of Drs N Bedi, A Grewal, S Dhuria, Karan (Technologist) and Dootika Shukla (professor of anaesthesia) performed laparoscopic operation on this child and 200 grams of testicular tumour was removed. Dr Bhatti claimed that it was for the first time in Punjab that this type of tumour had been removed in a small child with a laparoscopic operation. The child was doing well and had gone home. Dr Bhatti said absent testis in scrotum was a common problem in boys and parents should consult paediatric surgeons for further management. Surgery for absent testis should be done between the age of 6 months and 18 months. Otherwise, growth of testis will be retarded. There are 50- to 60-fold higher chances of testicular cancer in boys and young males with absent testis in scrotum. Dr A G Thomas, director, CMC and Hospital, Ludhiana, said advance laparoscopic treatment for surgical problems of children was available at Department of Paediatric Surgery, CMCH, Ludhiana.
