Tunisia becoming top worldwide destination for eye color - TopicsExpress

Tunisia becoming top worldwide destination for eye color surgery Tunisia has become the“El Dorado” for a new type of tourists—those who want to change the color of their eyes. Tameka “Tiny” Harris — businesswoman, R&B singer and wife of rapper T.I. — recently traveled to Tunisia for an esthetic surgery giving her new grey, snow-colored eyes. She posted her new picture on her Instagram page praising the technology — an artificial iris implant — developed by the U.S. company BrightOcular. Tunisia is now the prime destination for health tourism for two reasons: The best Tunisian surgeons have been recruited and the prices are low — 5,000 Euros ($6,243) for a package, including everything except the return flight. Around 100 patients have undergone the eye surgery so far in Tunisia, and none have had any side-effects, yet many skeptics protest against BrightOcular, since there is always a risk of blindness. The surgery is banned in many Western countries, including the U.S., where BrightOcular’s website says it is only allowed to correct albinism. Other methods have been developed to change the eye color, such as the Neoris technique in France, where the cornea is tattooed with a laser. This new beauty trend shows the increasing pressure, especially on women, to look good, and sparked off an ethical debate about identity.
