Turn Away From Evil Psalm 37:27-34 This is a Psalm of David is a wisdom psalm that is an alphabetical Psalm. The original psalm was written in the Jewish language. Each line of the psalm begins with a letter in the Jewish alphabet. The psalm works like an acrostic poem. The information is organized in a manner that helps the learner store the information in his/her brain. The information in Psalm 37 lets God’s people know what God expects of them. Psalm 37:27 27 Turn away from evil! Do good! Then you will live in the land forever. *Verse 27 is an admonition to turn away from evil. After one turns away from evil thinking, the negative information goes away. In order for the negative information to stay out of one’s thinking the person must fill his/mind with good. The reward for doing good is that the children of Israel will be able to live in the land God promised to them. Jesus told His disciples a parable about sweeping away evil but failing to fill the empty space with good. Luke 11:24-26 When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, “I will return to the house I left.” When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. Psalm 37:28 28 The LORD loves justice. He will never leave his faithful all alone. They are guarded forever, but the children of the wicked are eliminated. The Lord acts in a just manner. The Lord expects His people to act justly. Those who are faithful to God and act justly will be guarded by God. I Peter 2:9 reveals this to us God’s justice: But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Psalm 37:29-31 29 The righteous will possess the land; they will live on it forever. 30 The mouths of the righteous recite wisdom; their tongues discuss justice. 31 The Instruction of their God is in their hearts; they don’t miss a step. In verses 29-31 a righteous person is described. Righteous people speak in a righteous manner. A self-righteous person is a person who talks about his own ideas and exalts himself. The righteous person talks about God’s justice and speaks with a God-given wisdom. When God is in our hearts we speak His instruction and we don’t fall. Psalm 18:33 compares our feet to a sure-footed deer: Ps. 18:33-He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights. Psalm 37:32-33 32 The wicked, on the other hand, target the righteous, seeking to kill them. 33 But the LORD won’t leave the righteous to the power of the wicked, and won’t let the righteous be found guilty when they are judged. Ephesians 6 reveals to us God’s provision for His people. God does not say that we will not have problems, but He does say that when problems come, He helps us fight the battle. Ephesians 6:10-18Common English Bible (CEB) Put on the armor of God 10 Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and his powerful strength. 11 Put on God’s armor so that you can make a stand against the tricks of the devil.12 We aren’t fighting against human enemies but against rulers, authorities, forces of cosmic darkness, and spiritual powers of evil in the heavens.13 Therefore, pick up the full armor of God so that you can stand your ground on the evil day and after you have done everything possible to still stand.14 So stand with the belt of truth around your waist, justice as your breastplate, 15 and put shoes on your feet so that you are ready to spread the good news of peace. 16 Above all, carry the shield of faith so that you can extinguish the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is God’s word. Psalm 37:34 34 Hope in the LORD and keep his way! He will lift you up so you can possess the land. When the wicked are eliminated, you will see it for yourself! When we live our lives with hope in God and seek to follow Him, God rejoices and sings with us. He will lift us up. Zephaniah 3:17 “The LORD your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” My prayer for you today is that you know that God does not let us go. His love holds up. Love in Christ, Pat https://youtube/watch?v=NM14VZVu0og You Never Let Go-Matt Redman
