Turning The Tide: One Man Against The Medellin Cartel Paperback by Sidney D. Kirkpatrick (Author), Peter Abrahams (Contributor) Editorial Reviews From Publishers Weekly An American professor who loved the sea, Richard Novak undertook to study hammerhead sharks off Normans Cay in the Bahamas. His arrival there in 1978 coincided with the advent of Carlos Lehder, a representative of Colombias Medellin drug cartel, who planned to take over the island and make it a transshipment point for cocaine, perhaps with the connivance of the Bahamian prime minister. Kirkpatrick ( A Cast of Killers ) and Abrahams ( Pressure Drop ) ably recount the story of the confrontation between Novak, the unlikely (and unlikable) hero, stubborn, short-tempered, sanctimonious, and the villain, suave, urbane, sophisticated but deadly. Novak, who refused to be driven off the Cay, finally left of his own accord after laying the groundwork for the capture of Lehder, now in a U.S. prison for life. From Library Journal This is a fast-paced, novelistic account of a series of confrontations between marine research scientist Richard Novak and Medellin drug runner Carlos Lehder on the Bahamian island of Normans Cay. While Novak played a courageous part in the investigation of Lehder, it is hyperbole for the publisher to claim that he brought a ruthless cocaine kingpin to justice. Lehder was not arrested until years later. Also, the description of some of Novaks exploits seem exaggerated when compared to the version of the same events related in Paul Eddys Cocaine Wars ( LJ 7/88). The latter book or Guy Gugliottas Kings of Cocaine ( LJ 5/1/89) provide a better picture of the Columbian drug cartel. Still, this book will appeal to readers seeking an action-packed story. - Gregor A.
