Tralee man Charlie Kerins was hanged on December 1, 1944, having been convicted of the murder of Detective Denny OBrien in Dublin. His remains were re-intered in Rath Cemetery Tralee, in September 1948. Maurice ONeill of Caherciveen, was convicted of the murder of Detective Mordaunt and hanged on November 12, 1942. His remains were reinterred in Caherciveen in September 1948. The funeral procession on Saturday from Dublin delayed en route in the various towns and villages where people had gathered to pay tribute to the deceased. When the funeral of Charles Kerins arrived in Tralee at 10 p.m. on Saturday, townspeople turned out en masse to accompany the remains to St. Johns Mortuary Church. where the remains laid overnight. On Sunday the funeral to Rath was one of the largest seen in Tralee for years. The coffin containing the remains was covered with the tri-colour and the hearse bearing it had a guard of honour of deceaseds comrades. Fianna Eireann, Cumann na mBan, I.R.A. Republican bodies, ex-internees and general public participated.Occupying a prominent place in the procession were the members of the Kevins-ORahillys G.A. A. Club and the football boots and jersey lay on the coffin as the long procession winded its way via Boherbee to the Republican plot at Rath. In his last letter Charlie Kerins said that he did not mind what happened to himself as long as the ideals for which he was dying were held sacred by his comrades
