Twas the Night Before Nebkon Written by Sara Michael With Collaboration by Rachel Kendall ‘Twas the night before Nebkon, when all through the house Every creature was stirring, even the mouse! The cosplays were scattered, the room was a mess. And- “Hey, stop your moving! I’m hemming this dress!” We know we should sleep, all snug in our beds. But visions of con snafus dance in our heads. Did we pack our toothbrush? Remember wig caps? And what about Pikachu? Can’t forget that! With all of the chaos, we’re reeling from shock. Let’s stop for a minute and really take stock. We’ve got all our wigs, all our make-up and shoes. It’s going quite well. Maybe now we can snooze. We realize then, that something is lacking. If only those ponies weren’t so darn distracting! We’d thought we were done with the sewing and stitching. But the sailor scout dress still awaits in the kitchen. Now the sewing machine is back out on the table. While the T.V. is blaring whatever’s on cable. Our eyelids are heavy, our butts have gone numb. We’re covered in bandaids from elbow to thumb. Then the outfit is finished, we think that we’re done. We’ve battled the deadline. We struggled, but won. We do one last check, our victory’s thrilling! We make a discovery, a picture quite thrilling. The swords still need painting, the glue reapplied. With all of these fumes, it’s a shock we’ve not died. We gather supplied, though we’re running on “E”. A quick trip to Wal-Mart for a lot more caffeine. We return to our lair, motivation renewed. We’re down to the wire, but we’ll somehow pull through. The props are completed, not a moment too soon. Unfortunately, there’s one thing yet to do. Some may think it’s needless, that it doesn’t matter. But the hat must be perfect to cosplay Mad Hatter. So we scurry and rush in a hectic mad dash, ‘Til the sun starts to rise and we finally crash. Our slumber is troubled, we toss and we turn, As we dream of the dreaded Amoeba’s return. We remember con drama and wardrobe malfunctions. We can’t afford mishaps at this crucial junction. Then, late in the night – or earlier morning – Our dreams become sweeter, fond memories forming. We dream of our friends and amusing con antics. And all of a sudden, we’re not quite so frantic. We’ve learned in years passed that this awesome convention Is more of a family. There’s no need for tension. The staffers are kind and glad to assist. The attendees are friendly and- you get the gist. So when we awake, it’s a happier craze. As we stuff the car full for our favorite three days. Now the checklist is checked and everything’s packed. We’ve played backseat tetris. The art is exact. Then we get on the road, too excited to wait. We can’t miss a minute, don’t want to be late. At last, we are here, now I’m done with this rhyme. Happy Nebkon to all, and to all a good time!
