Twelve years ago, I was thirteen years old. I attended Smith Middle School on Fort Huachuca. I woke up around 0700 to learn a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I figured it was a really bad accident and got ready for school. At school, an assembly was called early into first period. It was announced that school was canceled. The assembly cheered. Our principal, a former Naval aviator, gave us all a proper G-rated ass chewing for not understanding the gravity of the situation. The nation was under attack. The boys were mostly quiet afterwards. The girls cried and wondered if Huachuca was next. I knew more about the military and base security than I should have at that age and assured others we would be okay. A few of the boys, myself included, wanted to go to war and find who did it. Some of us grew up and did exactly that. I grew up and was called to go elsewhere. Where were you twelve years ago?
