Twelve years ago today, Dick Monday and I were sitting in our trailer in walden, NY, preparing for the dress rehearsal with Big Apple Circus. After watching the whole tragedy unfold on tv, the cast and crew of the circus came together and decided that we would go ahead with our invited dress that night....that was followed by a weekend at wolf trap where the NY Goofs performed with Bob McGrath and we sang the national anthem in tears with 10,000 others who joined us. At the time, we questioned whether we should be performing at a time like that, but over the next months of doing the circus at Lincoln Center it became clear: bringing levity in tragic times is one of the best ways to contribute to healing. Still believe that every day.
