...Twenty years after apartheid’s end, black and nonwhite South Africans are still trying to reclaim the land that they were forced to abandon during the years the racist system was in place. South Africa’s apartheid period created major obstacles for all black, mixed-raced (labeled ‘coloured’ in South Africa), and other nonwhite citizens. Not only were these groups forcibly segregated from the white minority, but they were made to hand over their land to white citizens and the government. This regulation was enforced with the passing of the Group Areas Act of 1950, which reserved specific land for certain ethnic groups. The areas reserved for nonwhites were typically small, crowded, and further away from businesses and jobs. In 1991, the law was repealed with the Abolition of Racially Based Land Measures Act, but several families were still stuck in overcrowded dwellings...
