Twist of fate leads to happily eagle after! In the midst of an epic mid-air battle, two bald eagles crash landed into a muddy ditch. The scene brought traffic to a screeching halt. As a 16-year-old girl saw what was happening, she told her mom that it needed help. It must have been “eagle sense,” because FWC biologist Michelle van Deventer was the driver (and mom!) of that car, AND she is Florida’s bald eagle coordinator! Michelle pulled to the side and jumped into action when she saw the winning eagle fly off and the other remain in the ditch. After falling into the muddy ditch and losing her shoes, Michelle worked with Wildlife Center of Venice (WCV) volunteers and Sarasota County Animal Services to secure the exhausted and stressed eagle. The male bald eagle was transported to the WCV clinic, kept overnight, determined to have no serious injuries and safely released the next morning.
