Two South Africans have made history by rowing 10,000km across the Atlantic Ocean, arriving overnight in Miami after leaving Agadir, in Morocco, on January 30. Vasti Geldenhuis, 35, of Cape Town rowed with her boyfriend Riaan Manser, 41, to become the first people to travel between Africa and the US by rowboat. The journey was not without its share of trouble - at one point the couple almost got run over by a passenger ship and the constant 6-8m waves crashing over their boat meant that they had to incorporate route deviations which doubled their rowing distance. Before setting out, Manser, who is a professional adventurer, said of his partner, We are doing this together because we want to get married maybe and have children and grandchildren to share our stories with...I will never sit in a kayak and risk my life for someone who expects me to risk my life for them every day, but does not love me. I have learnt that I am only prepared to do that for somebody who loves me and would do the same for me. TM2NY, IOL
