Two, count em TWO, Georgia papers ran the same editorial -- from State Senator Charlie Bethel of Dalton and State Representative Jason Shaw of Lakeland -- calling on the state to allow pharmacists to give vaccinations. Both the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Newnan Times-Herald ran the piece (bit.ly/1oKijUa), which makes the smart, obvious, and well-thought-out argument: One of the most effective ways to protect public health and promote wellness is to ensure that Georgians are protected against preventable diseases and in this pursuit pharmacists are an underutilized health care resource. Many areas of Georgia lack access to traditional health care services. Six counties in Georgia lack a family medicine physician and 31 have no internal medicine physicians. In these areas, pharmacists are often the closest and most accessible health care practitioners. (Shameless plus: GPhA is working this year to pass this very law. Were glad to have Mssrs. Bethel and Shaw on our side.)
