Two days ago, while catching a flight I had three experiences that reminded me to appreciate the goodness and fascination of total strangers. The Super Shuttle driver taking us to LAX asked us some polite questions about our apartment. It led to a wealth building seminar that lasted the entire trip. He was a fifty something year old man with a voice like Morgan Freeman who had a great life story and advice about real estate investing, being a landlord, paying off the mortgage, where its best to buy. That shuttle driver was a hard working frugal man with over a million in property holdings. You never know. The second experience was when we got out of the shuttle van. My leaning forward listening to the millionaire shuttle driver must have edged my wallet out of my pocket. As Casey and I approached security I noticed my wallet was missing. I tore through all my carry on but couldnt find it. I assumed it had been forgotten back at home. My phone rang. The wallet had been turned into the Delta ticket desk by some other person catching a flight. The Delta agent checked my license, looked up my reservation, found my phone number, called, and ran my wallet to me. If the stranger who turned it in was less honest, or if the Delta agent was lazy and waited to deal with it until later I would have had a panicked New Years. As we waited for our flight, still marveling over our luck, a man approached us and gave us his free food and drink coupons for the flight. He was in first class, he didnt need them, he walked around looking for people to give them to, and he chose us. New Years is a time to seek a better version of us, but maybe its also a time to see the goodness of those around us. Heres to everyone that isnt me.
