Two months remain until the midterm elections, and most pollsters predict that Republicans have a 60% chance to win control of the Senate. Even Nate Silver is giving 2:1 odds. If Republicans win, three things will happen: (1) They will repeal Obamacare -- but this time it will pass both houses, forcing President Obama to veto. After outright repeal fails, the GOP will steadily introduce poison pills into every piece of legislation. Like a thousand little paper cuts, they will cripple the Affordable Care Act just to prove it doesnt work. (2) They will impeach Obama -- not for any particular reason, but for spite. It may take a while for them to decide exactly why theyre impeaching, but they wont care. They hate our President even more than they love America, and want to destroy his legacy by any means available. (3) They will control the pathway to the Supreme Court. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 81 years old and Justice Stephen Breyer is 76. If either steps down, we could see disastrous, 5-4 conservative majority decisions cemented with a 6-3 majority for the next generation. Citizens United wont be overturned, but expanded, and the rest of our democracy may be sold forever. These horrific actions are only the tip of the iceberg, but they are some of my greatest fears. Every election is the most important one of our lifetimes, but in 2014 those words have never felt more true.
