Two new flyovers for city, Shyamal bridge to be extended Posted in Ahmedabad The city will get two new flyovers -one over the Hatkeshwar Junction and the other near Dinesh Chamber. The Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee flyover will be extended to span Shyamal Crossroads and Jivraj Mehta Crossroads. The Road and Building Committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on Monday approved the three projects, apportioning Rs 265 crore for them. Of that amount, Rs 163 crore has been sanctioned for the extension of the Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee flyover. Officials in the corporation said that a survey carried out by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), New Delhi, had revealed that there were frequent traffic jams at Shyamal Crossroads and Jivraj Mehta Crossroads. So the AMC decided to extend the flyover. After the extension, the flyover will be 1.86km long. The flyover will have four lanes and work will be completed within 36 months of the allotment of the work order. The Road and Building Committee put on hold three other flyover proposals. They are the one over Helmet Crossroad connecting Vijay Crossroads and Drive-in Road, one over the Income Tax, and the third over Anjali Crossroads. The three have been put on hold as they were running parallel to the proposed metro project. Officials said that the second flyover which was sanctioned to be built will be over Hatkeshwar Junction connecting Khokhara and CTM. This bridge will be 562 metres long and will be constructed at the project cost of Rs 50 crore. The other flyover will connect Bapunagar Crossroads and Memco. This bridge, which will be 610 metres long, will be constructed at the project cost of Rs 52.46 crore. AMC officials said that the CRRI survey had shown that traffic coming to the city from Gurukul was several times heavier than the flow along the 132 Feet Ring Road. Source: TOI, 12 August 2014
