Two people have died after a multiple vehicle collision involving a petrol tanker in Sydney’s northern suburbs today (Tuesday 1 October 2013) . About 3.40pm emergency services were called to the crash at Mona Vale near the intersection of Samuel Street. A fuel tanker travelling east on Mona Vale Road appears to have lost control, hit a power pole and four oncoming vehicles – a utility, a Subaru, a BMW and a Commodore. The tanker has ended up on its side and fuel has poured onto the roadway - igniting the cars and surrounding bushland. People in the area attempted to get the injured out of vehicles and to safety As a result of the crash, two males died at the scene. They are yet to be formally identified. Two males and three females have been taken to Royal North Shore Hospital. The two males are suffering burns while the females’ injures are believed to be non-life threatening. It has been a multi-agency response with NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire & Rescue NSW, AusGrid, EPA, Transport Management Centre, Roads and Maritime Services and police working together A number of nearby buildings had to be evacuated due to the smoke and fire. No one from the buildings was injured Traffic diversions around the crash site are in place and for more information on road conditions motorists are advised to check livetraffic. Fuel was pumped from the burnt-out tanker and the wreckage is soon to be removed for mechanical examination. Police from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit are continuing their inquiries into the crash at the scene. They are being assisted by Forensic Services Group personnel.
