Two people have died while a number of drivers were detected drink driving and speeding by more than 45kph on our state’s roads over the weekend. About 5.05pm yesterday (Sunday 14 July 2013), officers attached to Barwon Highway Patrol observed a driver cross to the wrong side of the road on the Newell Highway, Bellata. They stopped the Mitsubishi Triton utility and breath tested the driver which returned a positive result. The driver was taken to Moree Police Station where a breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.279. The 39-year-old man was issued a court attendance notice for high range PCA and his licence was suspended. He is due to appear in Moree Local Court on Monday 2 September 2013. Shortly after 2.10pm yesterday (Sunday 14 July 2013), officers stopped a blue Toyota Corolla travelling east on the New England Highway, Belford. The driver was allegedly detected at 136kph in the 80kph zone. The 22-year-old male p-plater was issued infringements for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45kph as well as not displaying p-plates. His licence was also suspended. Meanwhile, about 2pm on Saturday 13 July 2013, a black Harley Davidson was stopped by police on Tarean Road, Karuah. The vehicle was allegedly detected travelling at 180kph in the 80kph speed zone. The driver was breath tested which returned a positive result. A subsequent breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.185. The 41-year-old man from Karuah was issued a court attendance notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45kph, speed dangerous, and high range PCA. His licence was also suspended and he is due to appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 29 July 2013. Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith, said we were still seeing drivers travelling at excessive speeds, despite warnings and the impacts of serious crashes. “Traffic and Highway Patrol officers detected motorists at these high speeds both on residential streets and on busy highways. “We know that speed can affect your ability to stop for an oncoming vehicle or pedestrian, so effectively these drivers were putting their lives and other motorists at risk. “We have seen drivers at 45kph over the speed limit have no regard for the safety of others or for the $2197 fine and licence suspension they can expect to receive. “Our message to all drivers is to slow down and not put yourself or others at risk on our roads,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Smith said. Road deaths: About 1am on Saturday 13 July 2013, a Toyota Rav 4 was travelling east on Reserve Road, Marrangaro, near Lithgow. Inquiries suggest the driver swerved to avoid a kangaroo, before crashing. The 17-year-old male passenger died at the scene. About 8.35am on Saturday (13 July), a 54-year-old male cyclist was riding with a group east on Cudgen Road, Duranbah. As the group rode downhill the rider was found deceased near the western kerb. Tweed police are investigating the incident.
