Two photographs of the Very Hungry Common Redpoll we saw at Lake Montauk today. (We being the eight birders on the Queens County Bird Club field trip.) We were about to leave the area when the bird flew in, landing right in front of us on a sprig of Evening Primrose, which it proceeded to devour. We saw other redpolls in the dunes near the village later that day, but the views couldnt compare to those of this rolypoly bird, making it the bird of the day, trumping multiple Iceland Gulls and the King Eider at Shinnecock.
