Two recent happenings during the weekend had me - in a way - feel proud about my community. 1. The unfortunate events surrounding a wedding planner who went missing, leaving the bride and groom (and their families) in a lurch with no dais, decor nor food mere 12 hours before the commencement of the wedding. Words spread; and individuals - strangers even - and companies came in to help where they could. The last I read, the wedding proceeded, and the happy couple had many more friends now. 2. The recent bad weather in neighbouring Malaysia causing floods in the northern states does affect us here. We are neighbours after all. A few organizations have collected supplies, dry food and donations to be handed out to the victims. Projek Peduli is one such initiative, and I believe there are several others. To those - my community, my people, my fellow Singaporeans - who had helped, directly or indirectly, a big thank you, a terima kasih, to you. This is what we need at this apt time. Knowing that the spirit of gotong-royong (communal working together) is still very much alive in 2014 is an indication that 2015 could be a good year. If we continue this spirit of compassion, empathy and volunteerism. Theres more to give, and theres more to contribute. Lets stay strong for us all: the community, the country, humanity as a whole. Again, respect and peace. Salam.
