Two years ago I damaged my back at work. I was told by two Doctors that due to my age and the years of constant, manual labour, This was bound to happen and that from then on, I was not to do anymore heavy graft. I spent the next 8 months at home and on crutches not able to walk more than a few 100 yards without being in severe pain. I thought I was finished at the age of 45 and almost went bankrupt whilst drinking myself into an early grave every day in a black world of despair....Work was and is the thing that keeps me sane. It gives a person a sense of self worth, pride and dignity that being unemployed doesnt....Plus the moneys nice too!....Financial freedom to do what you want and meet that unexpected bill without a care can mean the difference between being happy and secure or being depressed and feeling vulnerable. I was determined not to write myself off, so, with the help of a certain woman, Maggie Dowds, who seemed to turn up out of the blue just at my lowest point, I did. One year ago yesterday, 13th December, I went back to work and since then Ive cleared about 20 tons of chopped down tree, climbed about 50 miles of stairs, mowed lawns the size of football pitches, lifted countless wheelie bins full of builders waste, cleared building rubble by the sack load and chopped tons of logs that were blocking pathways etc. My back has never been stronger. Just goes to show what you can achieve with a lot of self physio and the will to carry on....Plus a good woman to drive you on when your feeling down. Wouldnt be here today if it wasnt for you Maggie so I just wanted you to know that. You helped give me my life back and thats a Christmas present to top all Christmas presents. x
