Type 2 diabetes is becoming increasingly more common. Diabetes is - TopicsExpress

Type 2 diabetes is becoming increasingly more common. Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death. More than 9% of the American population have diagnosed type 2 diabetes, and an estimated 1/3 of diabetes remains undiagnosed in asymptomatic people, so the real numbers are much higher. Further, 37% of the population in 2012 was found to have (undiagnosed) pre-diabetes. Diabetes increases risk for cardiovascular disease (heart attacks, strokes, peripheral vascular disease), kidney disease, retinopathy and blindness, neuropathy and amputations, and more. Thus, physicians and dietitians typically manage diabetes with carbohydrate counting, glucose-lowering medications, and, when necessary, insulin. Usually, diabetes progresses and symptom management increases, despite aggressive attempts at maintaining homeostasis. However, it doesnt have to be this way... Research has shown the ability to *reverse* type 2 diabetes with a low fat vegan diet (see articles below). Simply eating a diet based on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes, with small amounts of nuts and seeds, while opting for lower glycemic carbohydrate sources and and avoiding processed and animal foods has successfully reversed (and prevented) type 2 diabetes. Forks over needles, food over medicine, health over illness.
