Typhoon Soulik may enter Philippines today Wednesday, July 10, 2013 MANILA (Updated, 10:15 a.m.)-- Typhoon Soulik (international name) continues to intensify and slightly change its movement to west northwest almost near the boundary of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the state weather bureau said Wednesday. Soulik is moving toward near Batanes in extreme Northern Luzon and is expected to enter PAR between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. of Wednesday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa). As of 4 a.m., Soulik was spotted at 1,365 kilometers (km) east of Itbayat, Batanes, packed with maximum winds of 150 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph. Once the cyclone enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility, it will be named “Huaning,” the first cyclone to visit the country this month and the eight for the year. The cyclone will likely pass near extreme Northern Luzon before going to Taiwan. In its advisory, Pagasa said that Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Soccsksargen Region and the provinces of Quezon and Aurora will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms. Pagasa added that Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms. The coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be moderate to occasionally rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the southwest with slight to moderate seas. Weather forecaster Alvin Pura said Soulik is not likely to have any direct effect on the Philippines, but will enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rain over the western part of Luzon and Visayas on Thursday. Pura added the tropical storm is not expected to make landfall in any part of the country and is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility early Saturday
