Typical!Government force their way by giving us two unpalatable choices! Denying Seanad reform enforces their power&cuts the roles holding them accountable! Why not even consider the option of Seanad reform? True, at the moment, the Seanad IS a nodding dog. But if it were REALLY representative of society, it could stop unfair legislation that government force through the Dail! The Dail has a huge government majority that force through any unfair bill it wants! An actual representative Seanad could hold government accountable in this! A reformed Seanad is one function to hold power (i.e. government) to account. Government guillotine debate, & force bills through the Dail. Seanad could call them up on this. I know...it says alot that I am validating the Seanad by saying how a big gov majority push through any unfair legislation it wants through the Dail, &stifles questions!Some democracy, really! We need an overhaul of the whole system! We need a NEW ability to hold government to account! Maybe a 1/2 term referendum on their performance? Are they doing as promised? Power in petition? But government giving us choice of simply abolishing the Seanad shows their attempt to cement their power&stifle anyone that COULD hold them accountable!
