U.K. Jobless Claims Register Sharpest Fall Since 1997 UK claimant count declined by 41,700 to 1.35 million in September, the lowest figure since January 2009, labor market statistics published by the Office for National Statistics showed Wednesday. The monthly fall was the sharpest since June 1997 and exceeded consensus for a 25,000 fall. The decline for August was revised notably to 41,600 from the initial estimate of 32,600. Consequently, the claimant count rate fell to 4 percent in September from 4.2 percent a month ago. During three months to August, the unemployment rate was 7.7 percent of the economically active population, but down 0.1 percentage points from March to May. There were 2.49 million unemployed people, down 18,000 from March to May. At the same time, the number of employed increased 155,000 from March to May to 29.87 million in three months through August.
