U.S. Embassy, Tunis, Tunisia October 24, 2013 In light of recent events, including terrorist attacks against Tunisian security forces, demonstrations, and continued political uncertainty, the U.S. Embassy in Tunis recommends that U.S. citizens in Tunisia continue to maintain a high level of vigilance. U.S. citizens should monitor local events, report suspicious activity to the local police, and take appropriate steps to bolster their personal security. U.S. citizens should also exercise caution when frequenting public venues that are known to be visited by large numbers of expatriates, and should avoid large crowds and demonstrations. Recently, six Tunisian National Guard officers were killed in Sidi Ali Ben Aoun in central Tunisia, after exchanging fire with militants on October 23. In a separate incident on the same day, one police officer was killed in the northern city of Menzel Bourguiba. This recent violence follows a similar incident on October 17, in which two National Guard officers were killed by militants at a traffic checkpoint in the governorate of Beja in northwest Tunisia. The U.S. American Embassy Tunis strongly recommends that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Tunisia enroll in the Department of States Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you dont have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. For the latest security information, U.S. citizens traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department of States Internet website attravel.state.gov where the Worldwide Caution, Country Specific Information, Travel Warnings, and Travel Alerts can be found. Follow us on Twitter and the Bureau of Consular Affairs page on Facebook as well.
