U8’s win Glen Camogie Blitz The sun shone in Watty Graham Park on Saturday as our under 8 Camogie team beat Slaughtneil in a high scoring final to win the Glen Camogie Blitz. The girls were drawn out against Ballinascreen, Bellaghy and Swatragh in the group stages. First up was Swatragh, after a few minutes the Swatragh midfielder pucked the ball over the bar to make it 0-01 to no score to Swatragh, however the Lavey girls didn’t panic and a brace of goals each from Hannah Diamond and Orlaith Birt, one from Orlaith Scullion and a long range score from Carla Collins saw the girls convincingly over the line, 6-0 to 0-1. The second game of the group stage was against Ballinascreen, our forwards were potent in front of goal, Orlaith Birt with a hat trick, Carla Collins with 1-1, Ellen McCormick and Hannah Diamond with a goal each to make it 6-1 to 0-0 to the Lavey girls. Not to be outdone by the forwards the defence of Ella Shaw and Maria Hughes were very solid with goal keeper Lucy Harris confidently commanding her goal line to finish the match with a clean sheet. The final group game was against our neighbours Bellaghy, this was our toughest game so far, Bellaghy were strong in midfield and effective upfront. Lavey got off to a good start with a goal, however Bellaghy soon equalised, and scored another three goals in quick succession. Lavey were three goals down with just a couple of minutes left, Carla Collins scored a superb point from midfield however this was only a consolation prize as Bellaghy ran out 8 point winners. Since we did not top the group we were left in limbo until all other groups has completed their matches so the organisers could work out who was the top runner up, after about 10 minutes we found out that we had made it as the 4th team in the semi-final, Orlaith Birt and Hannah Diamond’s earlier ruthlessness in front of goals proved to be the difference in our qualification for the semi final stage. Drawn against Bellaghy again in the semi final gave the girls a chance to make up for defeat in their group stage game. Playing with the breeze Lavey were quick out of the blocks and scored a goal almost from the off however this was then cancelled out by a Bellaghy goal as Hannah Diamond pulled a loose ball into the back of the net to keep the Lavey girls in front, further Lavey goals from Orlaith Birt, and two from Carla Collins sealed the Lavey victory and excellent defending from Maria Hughes, Kate Marron and Louise Hassan won the girls a place in the final on a score line of 4-0 to 1-0. In the final we faced a Slaughtneil side who came through at the other side of the draw, Lavey settled into the game quickly with two early goals, one each from Hannah Diamond and Orlaith Birt, the Lavey girls were well on top throughout the game Carla Collins having a fantastic game in midfield scoring a personal tally of 4-3, the match ended 6-3 to 2-0. A fantastic performance from this young Lavey team who worked tirelessly through the day, they are sure to be stars of the future.
