UGC-SPONSORED NATIONAL SEMINAR On The Importance of Swami Vivekananda in Indian Socio-political and Legal Contexts in the Twenty-first Century Organized by : South Calcutta Law College, Kolkata. Dates : 2-3 December 2014. Venue : Uttam Mancha, Kolkata. Registration fee : ₹ 150/- only Concept Note :- Swami Vivekananda is a person who travelled extensively across the world speaking about India. Touched by his experiences in America (rather than Britain as in the case of Gandhi), he is possibly the foremost in his time to confront the issues of caste, religion, minorities, modernism, economics and politics of India. Thus, as a radical traditionalist, his interpretation of high religious philosophy is tempered by a very specific political/economic and legal outlook which arose from his honest concern about the people of his country. His exploration of Hinduism and the condition of the people of India gives birth to his two major presumptions viz. religion cannot be advocated to people with empty stomachs, and the poor of India should be awakened. Not to be restricted by utopian moral principles, Swami Vivekananda famously equalized the ‘Grihasta’ (householder) with a ‘Sadhu’ (hermit) praying in his cell, suggesting that for society to function in the long run, man had to be given the opportunity to excel and make money. He is the originator of the term “Dalit” and ante-dates Gandhi in expounding non-violence. He is neither in thrall with the past, nor willing to ignore and discard it altogether, rather advocating the need to be rational in the application of India’s history and culture. With his vast reading on modern and ancient texts and consequent capability to draw appropriate, practical lessons, he stands in present tumultuous times as the progenitor of a unique philosophy that is not inward-looking but extremely proud for being what it is. Abstracts : Abstracts within 300 words are invited within 15th November 2014 on the social, political and legal aspects of the thoughts/speeches/writings of Swami Vivekananda. They should be sent to the email address sclawedu@gmail. For any query or clarification, please feel free to contact Dr Debashis Chattopadhyay, Principal South Calcutta Law College at 94324 95182
