UHURU and RUTO to know their ICC cases’ fate this coming Friday – CHINA, RUSSIA supportive.President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy, William Ruto, will know their fate on Friday when the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) members votes to decide on whether they will defer the cases facing them at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for a year or not. According to Rwandas UN envoy, Eugene Richard Gasana, African countries in the UNSC led by Rwanda and Morocco are pressing for a vote this week on their draft resolution. Britain, France and USA have already declared their stand saying they are confident that the resolution does not have sufficient support on the 15-nation council to be passed. China and Russia, who are major opponents of the ICC, have backed the deferral of Uhuru and Ruto’s cases urging the UNSC members not to underestimate Africa’s voice. Chinese Ambassador to the UN, Liu Jieyi, who is also the Security Council President for November said there had been intensive talks on the case in a closed meeting. The members attach importance to concerns of the African countries. They see the role played by Kenya in peace and security and counter-terrorism, Mr Liu told reporters on Tuesday. Uhuru and Ruto have marshaled African Union (AU) members to compel the UNSC to defer the cases in accordance to Article 16 of the Rome statute. Uhuru and Ruto have been indicted by the ICC in connection with 2007-08 post election bloodshed where over 1,300 people died and over half a million displaced.
