UMSU, SUCC, PSU AGREE TO NULLIFY COMMITMENT FORMS The mother student union body of the University of Malawi (UMSU) and its two affiliates of SUCC and PSU from Chanco and the Polytechnic respectively have agreed to repudiate the idea of signing consent forms as a condition for reopening the two colleges, The Storm reveals. Officials of the three union executives met at Kamuzu College of Nursing (KCN) on Saturday where they deliberated in length and depth the long term implications of the idea of consent forms. Speaking to The Storm through e-mail, University of Malawi Students Union (UMSU) President, Steve Kumvenji, confirmed the meeting and the resolutions unanimously passed. "We have agreed with one strong voice to say a big "NO" to consent forms and we are not moving from that stand," said Kumvenji. He however said, as union leaders, they were in complete agreement with the idea of returning to class on the 17th of June because nobody was against learning but only the conditions were unfair. Asked how would they strike a balance between returning to class and refusing the forms, Kumvenji said they had since formerly written council to put their position very clear, asking them to call students to class unconditionally as they sought ways of addressing the matter. He further said that they (UMSU) had referred the matter to "special council for higher learning," a grouping of intellectuals mandated to look into matters of public universities. "We have told them that the forms are not a solution since they have very dangerous long term repercussions on students, and that sticking to the idea would lead to more chaos that may even result into another closure," explained Kumvenji. The form in question demands students to commit that they would be "resuming classes under the same conditions by which they were admitted into the University of Malawi at the beginning of the current academic year." Council, according to Kumvenji, is yet to respond to UMSU on the reservations raised with the forms, but the union leaders would be meeting again in due course to look at ways of advancing the matter.
