UNIS Hanoi visited by Nick on October 23rd, 2011 As the first international school established in Vietnam, one of only two United Nations Schools in the world, and the original IB World School in Asia, UNIS offers an educational experience that promotes the ideals and principles of the United Nations in action every day. UNIS is a not-for-profit school which was founded in 1988. There are more than 60 nationalities represented. Living in Hanoi, the county’s cultural and diplomatic capital provides both a global and local perspective for adventure. At once familiar and exotic, life in Hanoi can embrace both street markets and international haute cuisine, traditional Vietnamese music with rock or visiting symphonic orchestras, and art from an ancient tradition with the option of the modern fusion of a developing country. Nick : I was impressed with the facilities and fantastic space that is available. A new arts centre and Gymnasium have just been completed and they are outstanding. The staff I spoke with were very happy and I get the feeling that this is a good place to be. Housing around the school is very nice and affordable for staff. This looks like a really nice place to live and work and I would recommend this school very highly. “Working as UNIS has been one of my best international experiences. The diversity (faculty and students) give me the sense of living in a miniature world; where all get along, build a community and share the same citizenship.” Abigail Lopez, MSHS Spanish (alumni) “UNIS is a very unique School Community combining the UN Principals and themes with the IB curriculum. I feel privileged to work with such enthusiastic students, teachers and parents in our community. Many varied opportunities are available to UNIS teachers to align personal and professional goals from year to year. I am particularly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to travel to PYP Arts conferences as well being supported by UNIS to give workshops at other Arts Festivals. I am thankful that UNIS encourages teachers to follow their passions and bring it into their classroom teaching and the wider community.” Sally Oxenberry, ES Music
