UNRAVELED (dir. Marc H. Simon) Marc Dreier is an American investment broker who was apprehended and found guilty of committing a multimillion dollar investment fraud by using a ponzi scheme. This documentary follows him while he is under house arrest and awaiting sentencing at his lavish (though much of the art and furniture have been sold) NYC highrise apartment. The film makes excellent use of handdrawn sketches that effectively convey how this self-serving attorney was able to bilk hundreds of millions of dollars from single investors and hedge fund managers, and create the illusion of being a contemporary Midas of The Financial Sector. I found it most interesting that he claims that he did not steal to establish a super expensive lifestyle, but his phony lifestyle was absolutely necessary in order to convince the cons that he was deserving of their trust. The film is not designed to engender sympathy for Marc Dreier, but it was unfortunate that the filmmaker did not interview any of the victims of his thievery. These are the people that lost their life savings and had their financial lives destroyed, and their sad commentaries are noticeably missing from the film.
