UNRAVELLING A MYSTERY youtu.be/vzjRs3ARo0g In 1907, photographer William Harbeck mounted a hand-cranked camera on the front platform of a double-trucked open streetcar. Photos exist of the car itself, which appears to have been #29 or #31, but I have not been able to find any on the internet. The first scenes of the film are going northbound on Granville, then at 1:21. east on Hastings. In 1907, there were only a handful of the brand-new Narragansett streetcars finished, and I suspect we see them all. B.C. Electric Railway was keen to show off Vancouver as a modern city, so the newest equipment just had to be on view. At 0:56, we see the first Narragansett car approaching, and it looks huge by comparison to the little 4-wheelers. Even more impressive is the encounter at 1:10, as a new Narragansett rounds the curve in the opposite direction. It looks quite intimidating. At 1:49, a Narragansett approaches, but look carefully at the car following. Its #35, which also seems to have been a favourite of photographer Phillip Timms.
