UNSW Education Collective passed a motion today against the attacks on freedom of speech at Monash and Latrobe Universities. Education activists have to stand in solidarity with the attacks on democratic rights on university campaigns. I encourage all Education activist organisations to move similar motions. Solidarity! The UNSW Education Collective opposes the deregistration of the Socialist Alternative club at Monash University and the attempts by Latrobe University to expel education activist Ryan Higginson from Latrobe University. Freedom of speech must be upheld at universities. If freedom of speech is to mean anything it must also apply when students express opinions that are controversial. We call for the deregistration of the SA club at Monash to be reversed and the disciplinary action against Ryan Higginson to be dropped.
