UPDATE, 5/14/14, 8:40 P.M. Preliminary damage assessment: 8 homes, an 8-unit apartment complex and 2 commercial structures in Carlsbad have been damaged or destroyed. Fire is 10 percent contained. Weather conditions are expected to improve overnight, then return to very hot and dry Thursday. Palomar Airport Road is now open. Residents not evacuated are asked to shelter in place. Two shelters are open in Carlsbad. Calavera Hills Community Center is open and accepting people and pets in need of shelter. La Costa Canyon High School is open for people, but no pets please. Both shelters are fully stocked and not in need of donations at this time. Additional volunteers are not needed at this time. Dove Library and all community centers will be closed Thursday, except for the Senior Center. All Parks & Recreation programs and classes are cancelled Thursday. The public is reminded to follow all directions from law enforcement. Carlsbad Police Department has increased patrols to protect property in evacuated areas.
