UPDATE: Wheeling Water Warriors participated in a conference call - TopicsExpress

UPDATE: Wheeling Water Warriors participated in a conference call with several other regional activists on the recent permit application from GreenHunter to the Army Corps of Engineers to build a barging platform on the Ohio River. There are so many things wrong about this, we dont know where to start in just a FB post. First, the Coast Guard has not yet issued their decision on the issue of barging frack waste on the River. This permit application seems to put the cart before the horse so to speak, and some suspect that this indicates insider knowledge of the CG decision. Why else would GH spend the time and money to submit this application? Secondly, this permit application makes NO mention of the type of CARGO that is expected to be transported via this dock. The environmental and public health impacts of the proposed cargo needs to be considered in addition to the actual physical disruption of the endangered mussels which they note live along the shore which is in the proposed construction area. We would also like to clarify, this barging platform would not be at the New Matamoras plant, as we initially reported. It would be located in Meigs County, OH, very near by, but the actual location is in Racine, OH. To our friends at Appalachia Resist, who helped us with the Great Ohio River Relay, we will be there for you. We have heard that there are no less than 13 injection wells in the immediate area standing ready to receive frack waste. If you live near an injection well, prepare to have waste barged into your area soon. You will be dealing not only with the waste generated in your area, but also from other states. It has also been noted that this affects EVERYONE on the Ohio River. Dont think we are safe because it is downriver from Wheeling---if river barging is approved, they will be bringing waste from Texas and Louisiana. To our friends in the Charleston/Huntington areas, we definitely need your help. Keep the outrage of the Aquapocalypse fresh in your minds as we fight this latest assault on our River. The local office is in Huntington. We will be in touch with our allies at OVEC. Do we really want to become a destination for toxic waste? Do we think it is safe to barge on the river which provides our drinking water? We are hoping to work together with ALL of you to plan effective responses. We are developing various strategies, and we have very little time, as the comment period expires in less than a month. If you are an activist who has not yet had direct email contact with Robin Mahonen on this issue, please send her an IM here. Keep an eye out for CALL TO ACTION, they will be coming fast and furious......
