US NGO to prepare plan for Bellandur lake revival Consultant offers to conduct study free of cost; to sign agreement with BDA An American non-profit organisation promises to do what BBMP and BDA have not been able to in preparing a scientific plan to rejuvenate Bellandur lake, the city’s biggest and most polluted water body. BDA sources told Bangalore Mirror that talks with representatives of the San Francisco-based Sherwood Institute were held on Wednesday and a formal agreement will be signed on Thursday in the presence of Dr A Ravindra, former advisor to the chief minister on urban affairs. “Sherwood Institute will act as a consultant and will conduct a scientific study of the lake. They have offered to conduct the study free of cost. Once they submit the report, we will decide whether to consult them over the rejuvenation of other lakes,” K Manjappa, engineer-officer, BDA, said. The lake, spread over 800 acres, is located amidst the three major valleys of Bangalore and is regarded as a major catchment area for the Dakshina Pinakini river in Bangalore south. However, it is heavily polluted with an estimated 400-500 million litres of sewage dumped in the water body every day. The untreated sewage has not only changed the colour of the lake but has also led to the formation of a thick layer of scum along the banks. Moreover, the stench from the lake pervades the surrounding areas. Earlier, the BBMP had prepared a detailed action plan for rejuvenation of Bellandur lake and forwarded it to the state government. However, the state government did not approve the plan. Later, the ownership of the lake was transferred to BDA. The study by Sherwood Institute is expected to offer a scientific solution for rejuvenating the lake, including treatment of the sewage that enters the water body.
