Ugly Movie Review Rating: 3/5 UGLY Is Dark And Ugly Human Drama Pluses: Tejaswani Kolhapure makes an impact, Rahul Bhatt and Ronit Roy scene stealer, good performances from supporting cast Minuses: good plot killed by poor screenplay, wannabe dark treatment, nothing new in directorial style or approach Critic Rating: 3/5 Business Rating: 0.5/5 Verdict: Watch it for good performances Detailed Analysis: Ugly is last release of 2014 and next Anurag Kashyap film. Film was supposed to release in 2013 and after long delay, it is set to release on 26th December. Film has rather complex plot to start with. There is Shalini (Tejaswini Kolhapure) who is a middle-class housewife forced to stay at home by her second husband, police-chief Bose Shoumik (Ronit Roy). She considers suicide, and is about to shoot herself in the head with her husband’s gun when she is interrupted by her daughter, Kali (Anishika Shrivastava). Unaware of her mother’s activities moments earlier, Kali asks her mother to call her estranged father, Shalini’s ex-husband, Rahul (Rahul Bhatt). It’s a Saturday, and Kali’s day with her father as decided in the custody agreement from the divorce. Rahul, an aspiring actor struggling to make it big, comes to take her for a drive but ignores her in favor of phone calls made to try to further his career. Finally, Rahul leaves Kali alone in the car to go to an audition and to check in with his agent, Chaitanya (Vineet Kumar Singh). When he returns to the car, Kali is missing. Rahul first searches for Kali through the police, Chaitanya in tow. The local police-captain, Jadhav (Girish Kulkarni), does not take Rahul seriously until he realizes that Kali is the stepdaughter of the police-chief. Bose, out of hatred for Rahul, orders Jadhav to accuse Rahul of the kidnapping and to torture both Rahul and Chaitanya to interrogate and punish them. A game of one-upmanship follows as Rahul and Bose search for Kali while simultaneously attempting to upstage the other. Performance wise Ronit Roy again impresses though he repeats himself from Udaan and 2 States. Tejaswini Kolhapure is mindblowing as middle class housewife and Rahul Bhatt is natural to the core. Vineet Singh and Surveen Chawla are decent. Rest of the supporting cast is good too. Film has some real boring forcibly inserted sequences. Editing is uneven and cinematography is below par as every frame looks dark. Background score/songs are cliche and makes things worse. Story is good but screenplay lacks pace and depth. Dialogues are very good. Art department and costume department are below par. Director Anurag Kashyap delivers a film which could had been great with better treatment and climax but still he delivers an interesting social drama which is meant only for urban audience. Film will release day after tomorrow and will get 400 screens which will be apt for such film. Film has no chances at box office as Aamir Khan starrer PK is creating havoc at box office. Go for this one if you love such dark cinema with good substance! boxofficecapsule/review/Ugly-246
